Just a very basic question. Does the HtpasswdGenerator run on a Unix system, or only on Windows? Is it designed to write directly to the htpasswd files, or does it generate the files and you move them to the web server manually.

Htpasswd Generator works only on Windows systems. But you can connect to the *nix systems through SSH or FTP connections and work with the remote .htpasswd and/or .htgroup files as with the local files.

Htpasswd Generator writes to the .htpasswd file directly. And it is indifferent on a local or on a remote computer.
